What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

If you need a tooth extraction, you may be a bit nervous. Understanding what will happen during the procedure can ease your anxiety and help you feel ready for your visit to the oral surgeon.

The particulars will depend upon which tooth you’re getting pulled and if there are any issues such as infection or gum disease that could complicate treatment. As a general rule, however, a tooth extraction may be simple or complex, and each type has a standard routine.

Simple Tooth Extraction

If the tooth in need of extraction has fully erupted and is mostly intact, the procedure is considered simple and should take less than 45 minutes to complete.

Your oral surgeon will numb the area with a local anesthetic and may administer dental sedation to help you relax. After your tooth is removed, you may experience mild discomfort and swelling. However, the symptoms are easily managed with ice packs and over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like naproxen or ibuprofen.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

If your problematic tooth is impacted in the gums or damaged, you’ll need a complex surgical extraction.

The procedure will begin with the administration of a local anesthetic and dental sedation. After your tooth is removed, you may need sutures to seal the empty socket.

You won’t feel pain during the tooth extraction, but you can expect some discomfort and swelling afterward. As with a simple procedure, however, ice packs and NSAIDs should help you remain comfortable during the recovery.

Planning Your Procedure

When you visit a local oral surgeon to discuss getting your tooth pulled, you will undergo a thorough oral examination and health assessment. Diagnostic X-rays are also standard for both simple and complex extractions, as the images guide the surgeon in safely removing the tooth without damaging any nearby tissues.
