The Day After Dental Implant Surgery

If you’re planning to get dental implant surgery, you’re likely looking forward to having a gap-free grin once again. You’ll be able to smile with confidence, eat all your favorite foods — the list of advantages is long.

However, you might not be as excited about the day after dental implant surgery. What will your recovery be like? Will it be difficult?

For the vast majority of patients, the healing period is smooth, easy and uneventful. You really don’t have anything to worry about, particularly if an experienced oral surgeon is performing your procedure. But to put your mind at ease, here’s a look at what you can expect.

You Will Not Be in Much Pain

Many patients think that recovering from implant surgery involves a lot of pain, but it’s not true. You may have some mild discomfort, but ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication help keep the pain at bay — and you shouldn’t need either for long.

You May Have Swelling and Bruising

While you may feel pretty good the day after getting dental implants, you may not look your best. Swollen gums and cheeks are not uncommon, and you might have noticeable facial bruising after implant surgery. The symptoms should disappear in a few days, however.

You May Not Remember the Surgery

If you opted for anesthesia during your implant surgery, as most patients do, you might not recall the details of the procedure. Oral medication, laughing gas and IV sedation can all have an amnesia-like effect, so don’t be worried if your memory fails you.

You Will Need to Take Care of Yourself

The day after you get dental implants — and the next few days after that — you need to take it easy. Plenty of rest and relaxation promotes faster healing, and strenuous activity may lead to complications.

You will also need to stick to liquids and soft foods until your mouth heals, as eating anything hard, chewy or sticky could disrupt the surgical site. And to ensure you heal as quickly as possible, avoid smoking and drinking alcohol.
